From Retail Premises To Hotels
Its founder, G. van Eijl, began investing in property back in 1978. Although his initial investments comprised of retail premises and small office properties, he soon expanded to include restaurants and bars. In this manner, he was able to gain some experience in the field of refurbishment and renovation of monumental Dutch hotel properties.
Mr G. van Eijl was employed as the Marketing Manager of the prominent Amsterdam advertising agency of McCann-Erickson until 1989. He left this position to focus entirely on his own property operations. Within a few years, he began to acquire major properties, such as the Slotania Hotel in Amsterdam West and the Gooiland complex in Hilversum.
In 1998 the Amsterdam municipality put the Shipping House on the market. Van Eijl spots an opportunity to turn this majestic edifice into the fine characteristic and charismatic five-star hotel that exists today.
The Amrâth Hotel Group
In purchasing the stately hotel de l’Empereur in Maastricht, in 1997, the van Eijl family laid firm foundations for the development of The Amrâth Hotel chain. He had previously acquired Hotel Maarsbergen in Maarsbergen. The Amrâth brand was applied to all of the family’s hotels in the year 2000. Amrâth is actually the maiden name of Mr van Eijl's mother, who originally came from France.
